Yarrow essential oil is steam distilled from the white flowering tops and green leaves of the Achillea millefolium flowers that grow wild in the Bulgarian countryside. This essential oil has a sweet, fresh, and green herbaceous note with a woody and slightly camphoraceous note that gets sweeter in the drydown.
Achillea millefolium's high Chamazulene content gives this essential oil its deep, rich blue hue and its highly regarded ability to nourish and restore a healthy immune system. Chamazulene is a blue-pigmented sesquiterpene that can only be formed in the intense heat of distillation of its parent compound, Matricine, a compound found in the raw plant material, especially the flowers.
The yarrow herb is said to be named after Achilles, a figure in Greek mythology who used the herb to treat the wounds of soldiers he led in the Trojan War. He died of a fatal wound to his heel, the only vulnerable part of his body. That could explain why the Achilles tendon and the Latin binomial for yarrow, Achillea millefolium, share its name.
